Slot Play and When To Walk Away

March 2005
Joe Kubayov

I discussed in a recent article on blackjack how to ensure a winning night when a player is the recipient of a shoe that places them in a high positive position. I discussed how a player in a high positive position should set a target at which they will walk away still however, leaving the table a winner. The same can be said of slot machines with a little bit of differentiation. I have advised blackjack players that have won a lot of money to leave the casino and take home their winnings. I would advise the same to slot players. When you are seated at a slot machine and have won a large sum of money I believe two choices follow. Similar to blackjack, you have the option to leave the casino and remain a winner.

However, the slot player unlike the blackjack player has a second option. The slot player may choose to move to a different machine. As discussed in a previous article on slot play, machines are encoded with numerical sequences that instruct it as to when it should pay out. Therefore, there is no harm in moving to a different machine after winning a large sum of money in the hope that a different machine is a few pulls away from paying out an addition sum of cash. If however, a player moves to a different machine and begins to lose at a rapid pace I would advise walking away and keeping your winnings. The temptation to win more money at a different machine should never outweigh your desire to leave the casino a winner.
