Wheel of Winnings

March 2005
Joe Kubayov

It was 5:00am in the morning at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. Most of my buddies had been long asleep while a few of the more hardcore gamblers were huddled around a blackjack table on the other side of the casino. Sipping a coffee, I found myself in an area of the gaming floor that was deserted and devoid of any players. As I walked past yet another bar stopping only to tie my shoe, I looked up and noticed a row of slots that had the name "Wheel-of Fortune" plastered to the front of each machine. I thought to myself, "why don't I give this a try. What would the harm be in playing forty dollars." I sank my two twenty dollar bills into the machine and began to press the button marked "full credits." My first few attempts were met with disappointment as the slot machine failed to pay out. After a period of five minutes I had broken even and was ready to walk away. I carefully deliberated playing for five to ten more pulls and then joining my friends at the blackjack table.

Two more sips of my coffee and four pulls later I was the recipient of a bonus spin whereby a slot player presses an additional button on the machine and watches as a set of numerical dollar values rotate and eventually stop at an arrow determining that players' winnings. As the machine began to spin I looked down at the floor not wanting to see what I had won until the wheel had come to a complete stop. A few seconds later I looked up and noticed that the arrow was beginning to slow down close to the $1,000 mark on the bonus wheel. It was then that I realized I had won a lot of money. The machine began to ring and I could hear the applause of the slot stereo system playing loudly throughout the deserted room. I raised my hands in utter joy knowing that my vacation had taken a turn for the better. I pressed the "cash out" button on the machine resulting in a ticket being printed that entitled me to my prize of $1,000 in cash. I grabbed the ticket from the machine and ran towards my friends at the blackjack tables too excited to even realize that most of my friends were not awake to bask in my joy.
